The numbers are 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42. It is basic knowledge that any lost-ee will know that these sum up to 108. 108 is a very important number in my theory. 108 can be broken down into 10 8.
In hebrew, you read from right to left, and if you substitute the numbers for their assigned letter (1-Aleph, 2-Bet, etc.) you get chet Yood. This spells the word Chai. Chai is the symbol for life, chai means alive, and is presumed to bring good fortune. Chai is the opposite of Met, which is dead.
I believe that the numbers are being put into the computer as a dharma initiative attempt at stopping the apocalipse from happening. This could be a modernized approach at doing it, while the others are taking a more classic approach. Those who are familiar with the story of Sodom and Gomorrah will know that Lot was asked by god to find a certain number of people who were good people. Lot failed to do so, and God brought upon those people a terrible fate. I believe that the others are trying to do what Lot could not. God is who they are following (Fake Henry Gale said that their leader was not a forgiving one), and they are trying to find for him enough good people. Children are born good, which is why they take or try to take children. Henry Gale’s mission was to bring back Locke, which we can assume is a good person. Now michael is to bring back Hurly, Jack, Kate, and Sawyer, all of whom we as an audience are supposed to hope are good (sawyer is really not bad, it’s just a front). I believe that the Others are trying to stop the apocalypse, and are good.
The black smoke, I believe is either God of the spirit of the antichrist. Either way, it looks at the past of the person it faces and decides if it is a truly bad person. If it is, then I believe it will posess that person and bring forth the apocalypse. It works against both the Others and Dharma.
Now that Eko has decided to move into the Hatch, I believe he will start contemplating the numbers and because he knows the bible stuff, he will possibly start realising something about this, although I can’t be sure about that.

i tend to think that the black smoke is a DIRV, dharma initiative remote viewer. it makes more sense when you accept that walt is not normal, that he can make stuff happen and astrally project. im surprised that the others let him depart so easily, if he was so important.

Good Idea…not the correct telling of the bible story though. God did not ask Lot to find Good people..Abraham asked God if there were any good people in S & G then would He spare them. BTW…the Hebrew letter Yod dosnt mean death….it is a primal vibration and actually means begining or origin.
Very good. That is a good idea of what it may be about and could of also fit in with the rumour that the island is where they go before heaven or hell. But perhaps the others are deciding who gets to go to heaven and who gets to go to hell. Also when they let walt go on the boat with michael and gave them co-ordinates they could be puttinting them in the right way of heaven or sending them back alive. Im not sure about this. As to me everything seems so real but you never know do u. this is lost!!
I believe that time is slow on the island. Locke said they had been there for 6 weeks, but there was a blog of one of the ‘lost peoples’relatives had a blog and said they had been gone for 2 years
Yod is one of the ‘four’ letters of the Tetragrammaton, the Hebrew shorthand which stands for ‘insert the secret name of God here’, Yod Heh Vav Heh. It is the misinterpretation of this abbreviation which leads to the notion that Yahveh or Yahweh is the ‘name’ of the Judeo Christian God. Truth was, only one person in the ancient faith knew the name of God, and that was the High Priest of the Temple. Once a year on Yom Kippur he would enter into the sanctum sanctorum and speak aloud the Name over the ark of the covenant, and in doing so would renew the covenant between the Hebrews and YHVH.
I only mention this bit of esoteric Judaica because it so resembles the act of pushing a button every so often to avert disaster. Interesting that the numbers add up to a Yod. Perhaps there are two Heh’s and a Vav somewhere else on the island.

Isn’t anyone worried that lost will end as stupidly as the matrix? There’s too much hype. They’re only want to entertain you long enough to sell you a new microwave, don’t forget that.

One could only hope that Lost would be as well produced and thought out as the Matrix. I disagree with many of the theories on this page. Abrams and Lindeloff do not seem to be basing thier ideas on biblical characters. Many characters could reference God, but I think the important refreces are towards Greek and Roman mythology (ie Cerebrus, Hydra, Persephone). Also Ethan Rom can be reorganized to spell “other man” or “the roman.” I’m not here to fix your theory, because it is poorly developed, I just wanted to let Phillip know that the end of Lost will be the crowning moment in his life. And all of ours, have faith in JJ and the Lost crew.
