The Vincent Theory

“The Vincent Theory” is a work in progress by a member of the AndFound Forums named The Gunslinger. For more information about this theory and a complete breakdown by episode please visit this website.

I began this study as a simple research project. I had no pre-defined ideas at the beginning; I just felt that it would be an interesting character study. I also had a quiet hope that I just might turn up some nugget that would prove to be useful to someone else.

With that in mind… I believe that I have discovered an oddity in the relationship between Vincent and the Lostees. Some people have said that every time Vincent shows up “Something bad happens” and that does appear to be the case. But it goes even deeper than that. The places where Vincent appears and the people with whom he decides to associate do have a direct impact on the development of the plot. Those who Vincent is close to usually have bad things happen to them, and it appears that running after Vincent into the jungle is always a bad idea.

Here are some theories, based on information and speculation to date:

  1. Vincent is on the island for a reason, just like most of the other Lostees.
  2. Vincent knows more than he is leading people to believe.
  3. People who have “encounters” with Vincent are more likely to die than those who do not.
  4. Vincent spends long periods of time away from the Lostees, giving him ample opportunity to explore the island and potentially be influenced by it.
  5. Vincent HAS been changed by the island, but I am not willing to say whether or not he is evil.
  6. Vincent’s absence is as importance as his presence.
  7. Vincent is the Silent Watcher

Lost theory:

Plato believed that man is a duality between his ‘good’ higher self and his lower animal self. In order to rise higher, man represses his animal instincts. This process begins as children, who repress certain bad traits to gain the love of their parents. Plato call these repressed traits ‘others’. Some religious thinkers believe that these others must be absorbed back into the self in order to achieve integration or enlightenment. (The Hanso Logo is a modified Yin-Yang symbol)
Note that many of the cast members have parent problems. Kate, Jack, Locke, Sawyer, Sun, Boone, Anna-Lucia all have parent issues. Maybe the others are pieces of their psyches that have been suppressed and need to be regained,

it just has to be said but vincent is a dog, not a real person, so obviously he cant communicate his thoughts and views on the island, even if he does know “more than he is leading people to believe.”

#Ryan 07.31.06

UM hes a dog…

#Juan 08.23.06

Correct me if I’m wrong. Isn’t it true that dogs, and
any other animal, travels in the BACK of planes? Inside a cage, in the cargo area?

Now, the back of the plane “landed” on the other side, a cuple of days walk from the main side (where all the characters are).

How did Vincent appeared almost at the very moment of the crash?
I don’t know if anyone noted this. (Please don’t reply “Duh, it’s a TV show!”, because I already know this).

The cargo area in located UNDERNEATH the passenger cabin so it is conceivable that he was with the front end of the plane. I think the real questions should be where did his cage land, and how did he get out, uninjured?

#Gary 10.01.06

Nope. e.g. Charlie’s statues, from tent to ocean.

#carolyn 10.20.06

i agree w/ tim no cage no injuries? he didn’t even look dirty

#Tim 11.19.06

Well someone on another board may have answered my question about how Vincent would get out of his cage uninjured, and if anything its a damn good theory, it’s not mine but here it is: THE SMOKE MONSTER IS TAKING VINCENT’S SHAPE - LIKE WITH JACK’S DAD & EKO’S BRO YEMI. Seriously, that actually would explain how Vincent showed up, unharmed, and someone’s theory about how he seems to show up before a lot of bad things happen. Crazy, crazy, it never even crossed my mind until someone said it… and I think I believe it!

it could be an accurate theaory as mabey when people say bad things happen when walt is around it could be that it is actually because vincent is around, as nobody would suspect a dog
