I believe that the sickness is the flashbacks, let me explain. Dharma staged the crash, and injected all of the survivors with the vaccine. Each of the survivors forget parts of their life, and they remember them in flashbacks. Once all of their memories are remembered, they will discover they have something in common: Dharma, they will remember how they are all related to Dharma, and discover how to stop them and get off the island. I also think Claire was getting closer to remembering the truth, so they decide to take her then, instead of after Aaron was born.

the flash backs are just part of our viewing experiance to help us understand their history, the charictors are not actualy haveing them, exept in one or two instances.
