Dharma, Hanso, and all - Part Two

This Lost theory was posted by Marco in the AndFound Forums.

Okay, for those of you who are not sick of my long windedness, this will be the last monster post… for a while anyway…

In the first chapter I gave a rather all over the place theory, so as a summation, as I did get confirmation on the whole Magnus Hanso theory with Rachel Blake’s second post…

Magnus Hanso, Alvar’s Progenitor, was a wealthy Danish burgher who made his fortunes with slave-ships by way of buying the Black Rock and other vessels, as well as the shipping company, then long after the abolition of Slavery in the British Empire in the 1st third of the 19th century, Magnus finds a continued practice of slavery in India and Indonesia. During one such transport, they lost their bearings due to the Electromagnetic properties of the Island and in what I can only assume was a typhoon or Tsunami, unless the coastline of the island has changed that dramatically since the 1880’s, the Black Rock was swept inland and became shipwrecked, and Magnus was either Alone, or he too perished, as the Slaves were not even removed from their shackles, and died where they were chained to the hull.

Now, as this was Alvar’s ancestor, we can only assume he had already had children, and either they, or their descendents somehow tracked the course of the Black Rock, and found Magnus’s body, and committed him to the earth (as stated in the blast door map, the Black Rock/ Magnus Hanso’s final resting place). They, or Magnus, had already discovered the Mystical nature of the island, perhaps the electromagnetics of the region had some weird or catastrophic effect on the world about it, perhaps they incurred the dream visions of the dead, the point is, prior to the arrival of the modern day Hanso Group/Foundation and the formation of the large communal research community, there was some freaky shit going on, on this Island (ie, the four-toed foot stump remains of a statue, which closely resembles, or has thought to resemble the Collosus of Rhodes, a massive statue the Sun God Helios of antiquity which was said to be destroyed in an earthquake in 224BC) But then again, I do like the theory of large scale Tsunami sweeping the Black Rock inland, and at a considerable altitude, especially if a magnetic burst also had tectonic power, it could have possibly triggered the tsunami, and also smashed the statue, if in fact it was not transplanted there from the ruins of the city of Rhodes…anyways I digress too far..

Lets say the island remained a family secret, and in the early 70’s, Karen and Gerald de Groot who were looking for funding for their Dharma Initiative project, somehow linked up with Hanso, and he immediately knew where to find an isolated place where the de Groots could setup stations to explore Meteorology, Psychology, Parapsychology, Zoology, (especially) Electromagnetics, and usher in their own brand of Eutopian Social Engineering. The following stations were setup… The Staff, a medical facility, The Swan, a Elctromagnetic research station, also the Arrow, the Pearl, etc, etc… the construction of these certainly could have been farmed out to either Widmore or Paik, or both, as we know both wealthy families are connected to the Hanso Foundation. This would ahve been in the mid seventies, and my new theory is that the Cerebus, the possible cloud of nanites is a Hanso invention, partnered with the de Groots, to protect their investment in the Initiative. Now lets say the “incident” occurs around 77-78, and whether it be a viral outbreak, or what I’m pretty sure is due to Cerebus (as there are several references to area’s being unstable or unusable due to Cerebus activity. Now whether it was hanso initiated due to disagreements with the direction the de Groots were heading, or if it was accidental, all we do know is that the nanites started killing people or a virus did, which nanites could very well represent as they are molecular-sized and could very well enter the body and destroy it from within, it could also be responsible for genetic manipulation or even worse as thought and body control. This could also explain the repair of Locke’s legs, and the cure of Rose’s cancer and why everyone’s cuts and wounds heal so quickly, it would not however explain why people can still die, and stay dead. My only other question at this point regarding the Swan, and the Islands geomagnetic forces, is prior to the coming of the hanso/Dharma settlers, there was no technology ont he island to prevent the electro magnetic surges from destroying the world, but I do have a theory… and it would kind of play into what Kelvin had said, that lets say they tapped this natural force, and used it to power the whole island, but like trying to contain any kind of volatile anything, it needs to be rigidly controlled, and say the code 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42 which equals 108, and the number of minutes in between having to push the button, is done to manually re-contain the control over their precious power source. perhaps before the computer, they had other means of controlling this, but once it escaped them, they covered everything that had orignally been there with 10 feet of conrete, and built the new power station over it, with the new protocol of pushing the button. Then again, this may all be part of an elaborate mind game experiment, as mentioned in the Pearl orientation VHS, and those who are duped into pushing the button are merely part of the experiment, but then again we’ve seen twice now what happens when the code is not enterred and the button pushed.

Anyways… lets just say during the visit of Hanso in December of 81, that he or Mittlewerk or whoever didn’t like what they saw, and either generated or instigated the overthrow of the de Groots via the cerebus in 1985 and Hanso quickly pulled the plug on the Initiative, however, we know they were continued to be supported, those who abandoned their former stations and found they were trapped on the island, and being the scions of the de groots, the Dharma survivors found some new purpose, or perhaps they became slaves to whatever the mystical force of the island is, in any case those masquerading as the Good Ones, are nothing more than Hanso/Dharma people whom have formed their own society and rules, based on whatever ideals were first established through the Eutopian social engineering project. Now as Hanso owns the island, and would rather tenatively continue to support the survivors by sending them food and supplies (ie, the air drop… funny how they knew exactly when to ressuply the 815 survivors with food, exactly when they ran out) but also to use this “hidden” island as a prison for various undesirables, or those who had transgressed against the Foundation or it’s partners… For example, Sun and Jin would have been sent to the Island as both were trying to escape from Mr. Paik, and Desmond, for crossing Charles Widmore (this would also lend weight to the theory on how Penelope Wdmore would know to search for Electromagnetic signatures, as she doesn’t know where the island is, but knows of it’s existance through her father and his shady business practices) Jack was guilty of turning his father over to the Board of Directors for drinking and operating, a Hanso funde hospital. Hanso also does not want certain information leaked, and when leonard had heard the transmission, something pretty awful must have happened to him, for him to end up in a near catatonic state and to endlessly repeat the numbers in the nuthouse, which also may be a Hanso funded mental ward, and thinking where safer then with the insane, the information of the numbers, but then Hurley used them and ended up winning the lottery and giving alot of publicity to the numbers and when he traced them to Calgooley, Oz, the hanso decided to finish the job, by crashing the plane. This would be the purgatory theory in a way, in the sense that all the major characters are guilty of one fauz pas or another, and are sent to the island for imprisonment, or redemption, ie becoming one with the devil (joining the others) The other Idea is back to the theory that the numbers are cursed, and by some strange twist of fate, anyone who came in contact with the numbers, or with someone who had, would somehow end up trapped on the island. I’m sticking actually with Fate mixed with a curse, mixed with un-devine intervention (ie Hanso-Widmore-Paik-Dharma)

Truly though, I want to say that my real theory as to how the 815 survivors became entangled is Fate, there is a battle ground for good and evil, and rather than waiting for sides to be chosen, the others take those who could be easilly swayed, or turned with medication, mind control, etc (all the Dharma experiments) and used for their battle. The Good Ones are those easilly taken or used, the group of the Others are controlled by HIM and HE could be Hanso, unless Hanso was also sent to the island by Mittlewerk in his takeover of the company, and therefore Mittlewerk would be HIM. The Others ARE the Dharma Surivors/Betrayers but 100% undeniably Hanso people. There is a Virus on the island, unless the virus and the antidote are in fact nanites. The button does in fact DO SOMETHING and that something is pretty disasterous… Everyone else was in fact BROUGHT to the island, as their connections and connections to the numbers and Hanso and it’s subsiduaries, and whether this is the work of Fate and Providence, or the dastardly work of the Hanso Foundation… we just don’t know and can’t speculate too much until they reveal more… ok… I’m done rambling…. next?

“it would not however explain why people can still die, and stay dead”
I don’t believe they do. John was shot, and lived, or perhaps came back. Ben saw his dead mother, ALL of the 815 ’survivors’ are believed to be dead to the outside world, and like sbear said, Jack saw his father.

but I think it may be something other than seeing just dead people. Hurley saw his imaginary friend again, Libby said she never saw the shoe, but she may just not remember/is trying to convince Hurley he’s not real.

I believe the 4th season will answer a lot. if not, i’ll go crazy myself.
