2.18 - Dave

Published on April 6, 2006 in Season-2, Recap, ABC, Hurley

Tonight’s episode starts off with Libby and Hurley going for a run on the beach. Hurley reveals to Libby that he has a large stash of food from the hatch and that he is “sick”. He tells Libby that he wishes the food would just go away and he begins to smash a large container of Dharma ranch. Libby and Hurley have a moment and almost kiss when Jin and Sun come storming through looking for the new supplies.

As the group is rummaging through the supplies, Hurley sees a familiar face and chases him through the jungle. Hurley trips on a branch and finds the shoe of them man he is chasing. Libby catches up with the distraught Hurley and she tells him how proud she is of him.

We are then treated to another Hurley flashback with him in the mental institute talking about an “accident”. His doctor asks him if he had finished his homework and Hurley responds “I didn’t finish my homework because Dave said it was stupid.”

Back on the island Jack examines Locke’s leg and diagnoses it as a small hairline fracture which he must stay off of for several weeks. Kate recommends Locke using the wheelchair but he will have none of that. Kate leaves in search for the crutches taken from the fuselage before burning it.

Sayid questions the ‘other’ held captive and catches him in a lie. The man that once claimed to be Henry Gale says “4 months ago I was part of a search party” and that the real Henry had broke his neck and all he did was bury him. Sayid pulls out a letter written on a dollar bill that proves other wise.

According to ‘Henry’ if he says anything ‘he’ will kill him, when asked if that ‘he’ is the bearded man (or Mr. Friendly) Henry replies “he is a nobody”. Sayid demands a better answer and attempts to shoot him. Anna-lucia steps in and saves Henry from Sayid. Anna-lucia then takes over the watch on the prisoner.

Back to Hurley’s past, we learn about his horrible accident and how his father died. Hurley stepped onto an over crowded deck that had 23 people on it instead of the recommended 8 and it collapsed killing his father and one other person. After the accident was practically in a “catatonic state” and the only thing he didn’t stop doing was eat. Hurley’s doctor shows him a picture of Dave and him, he realizes that Dave does not exist.

Hurley is awoken by Dave in the night and they decide to escape the hospital. Dave explains that the reason he wasn’t in the picture was because of kinko’s/photoshop. On the way out Hurley stops for a bight to eat, Marcus’ unfinished lasagna and they make there way to the window. Hurley pulls out the keys he stole and Dave hops out the window. Hurley confronts Dave about his motives and locks him outside.

Back on the Island, Hurley is trying to figure out if Dave is actually there or if its still all in his head. This is where things get complicated, Dave tries to make sense of the whole situation by explaining to Hurley that he is still in the hospital and this is all a dream. That’s the reason why the numbers are in the hatch and why Libby pays attention to him. Dave leads Hurley to a cliff and tells him in order to wake up he must jump. Dave leads by example and backs off the cliff laughing all the way down.

We come back from commercial with Locke on crutches and Anna-lucia cleaning her gun. Locke asks for five minutes with the prisoner and Anna accepts.

Locke hobbles into the make shift cell and asks for the ‘others’ name and if he got caught on purpose, he replies “why don’t you just keep calling me Henry, I’ve gotten used to it”. Locke says “you and your people have been on this island.. for god know how long” and Henry interrupts with “God doesn’t know… god doesn’t know how long we’ve been here John [Locke]. He cant see this island any better than the rest of the world can.”

Henry explains that the hatch is a joke, he watched the numbers reach zero and nothing happened except some noises before the numbers reset themselves. Locke doesn’t believe him and Henry responds “I’m done lying.”

Back to Hurley at the cliffs, Libby tries to stop him from hurting himself and she explains that everything is real. The two have another moment and end up kissing. As they step away from the cliffs she has an odd look in her face and we get to see another flashback. Hurley is sitting at the table where is doctor took the picture and the camera pans around showing Libby as a patient taking her medication.

The episode ends… next up S.O.S.
